The Honorable Alexis M. Herman will deliver the keynote address at Kaplan University’s summer 2011 commencement in Chicago. On May 1, 1997, she was sworn in as America’s 23rd Secretary of Labor and the first African American to lead the U.S. Department of Labor. Under her leadership, unemployment in the country reached a 30-year low. Today, Secretary Herman serves as chair and chief executive officer of New Ventures, LLC, and lends her expertise and talent to a vast array of corporate enterprises and nonprofit organizations. Secretary Herman will talk to graduates about the importance of education to workforce development and global competitiveness, and will bring a message of hope for the future. The commencement will celebrate the graduation of more than 7,000 online students. More than 1,100 of them are expected to travel to Chicago for the ceremony, where they can meet their classmates and professors face-to-face for the first time. Herman’s speech and the presentation of degrees will be broadcast live via the Internet for graduates participating from their homes around the country and the world. Since 2001, when the Kaplan University began offering online degrees, nearly 40,000 online graduates have used their education to advance professionally and meet personal goals.

Job Description Position Summary
Provide academic tutoring and support to Kaplan University Learning Center students to help them realize their educational goals.

Key Job Responsibilities
Provide face-to-face academic support to Kaplan University Learning Center students who come into the Learning Center for help. Establish and maintain a mentor/coaching relationship with students. Coach students to a level of academic self-sufficiency as their degree program progresses. Communicate effectively and frequently with KULC management, student adjunct instructors, and/or Academic Advisors about student successes, issues, barriers, and other matters. Provide timely and accurate execution of assigned administrative and other duties. Adhere to scheduled start and stop times. Use principles of adult learning theory to flexibly meet the needs of students seeking help in the KULCs. Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree (B.A./B.S.)
- 1 - 3 years related experience
- Proficiency with computers.
- Excellent organizational and written/verbal communication skills.
- Ability to follow established processes, work effectively with struggling students, and maintain a positive attitude.
- Proven ability to enhance students' academic progress.
