Kelly Blue Book Reports Fuel-Efficient Vehicle Values Dropping
The only vehicle valuation and information source trusted and relied upon by both consumers and the industry, Kelley Blue Book www.kbb.com reports that after 20 consecutive weeks of gain, values for gas-guzzlers reached its peak in May in response to the recent decline in fuel prices. The leading provider of used and new car information reported in its Blue Book Market Report for July 2011 that fuel-efficient vehicle values are likely to drop 15% by the end of the year. This is in response to the return to normal production levels for manufacturers in Japan as well as the stabilizing gas prices.
The Kelley Blue Book valuation team believes that even though compact and subcompact values have declined over the past 4 to 6 weeks along with the overall market, the overall used-vehicle market should not decline more than another 3% to 5% by the end of the year. Fuel-efficient used cars have reached their peak in demand and price so larger drops will most likely be seen in this segment.
The overall used-car market average was far surpassed by fuel-efficient subcompact, compact and hybrid cars from January through May with a noteworthy increase between 20 and 25%. This is attributed to:
Gas prices increasing by nearly a dollar during the period. Limitation on the supply of new fuel-efficient vehicles as a result of the earthquake in Japan. Limited supply of good-condition vehicles due to reduced leasing and trade-ins.“While depreciation has been relatively mild so far, based on changes in gas prices and issues with supply, Kelley Blue Book believes a significant 15 percent correction is likely by the end of the year,” said Alec Gutierrez, manager of vehicle valuation for Kelley Blue Book."If we take a look back at the auction market in 2008 when gas prices hit $ 4.00 a gallon, it is anticipated decline in the coming months."
