Comic-Con 2011 Gaming Wrap-Up
A thousand apologies for the baron blog last week. I was on my summer vacation and I picked quite the week to catch some R&R. Little did I know when I scheduled my vacay that it was during the week of San Diego Comic-Con 2011.
Comic-Con has evolved from a convention solely focused on comic books into a Mecca of total Nerddom. Video games only account for a portion of the spotlight that it has to share with movies, comics, television series, books, action figures, and collectables, but the industry has saved some pretty substantial announcements for this yearly event.
Here’s a wrap-up of the biggest gaming-related announcements that were unveiled, announced or discussed at San Diego Comic-Con 2011.
Microsoft Unveils Limited Edition R2-D2/C-3PO Xbox 360
In an early surprise announcement that nobody expected, Microsoft unveiled a new edition of the Xbox 360: a console that resembles Star Wars’ greatest bromance that isn’t Han and Chewy. It’s a console that looks like R2-D2 paired with a controller that shares the likeness of C-3P0.
It comes with an white Kinect and a whopping 320 GB hard drive, making it the biggest hard drive Microsoft has ever created for the Xbox 360. The console will also be bundled with the upcoming game Kinect Star Wars
Picking up this limited edition console won’t be cheap. Its price is being set at $450, but that’s only $50 more than the standard Kinect bundle, which comes with a 250 GB hard drive.
No word on a release date yet. Amazon has the date listed as December 31, 2011, which is usually just a placeholder for a future date.
I found it slightly odd that Microsoft would choose to release a limited edition Xbox 360 like this one so late in the console’s lifespan. The next iteration of a Microsoft console is probably only two years away. Oh well, this console is still gorgeous and is an incredible collectors item for any Star Wars buff. ’s deep RPG elements are what set it apart from other games. These elements are something that can’t transition properly to the big screen.
Also, movie adaptations of video games have a horrendous track record. I can’t get excited for any game-to-movie adaptation until I see the first great video game movie. Lastly, I’ve heard talk that video game movies are being moved forward before and nothing ever comes of it. I’ll only believe it’s real when I see a trailer.
