The Cultures of Caregiving: Conflict and Common Ground among Families, Health Professionals, and Policy Makers

As the population ages and the health care system focuses on cost-containment, family caregivers have become the frontline providers of most long-term and chronic care. Patient care at home falls mainly on untrained and unprepared family members, who struggle to adjust to the new roles, responsibilities, and expenses. Because the culture of family caregivers—their values, priorities, and relationships to the patient—often differs markedly from that of professionals, the result can be conflic

Child Custody Library

A unique and extraordinary book for family members, caregivers or anyone assisting the terminally ill, and in fact, a book best read well in advance of need. I plan to make sure my husband, children and siblings all read Reflections of a Loving Partner: Caregiving at the End of Life as soon as possible.

Make the journey into the Valley of Death accompanied by a masterful guide who has been there and back at the side of his dying partner. Andrew Martin teaches us how to understand, listen to and support the dying by graciously opening his life story to our scrutiny, sharing his learning process as a hospice volunteer and intimate details of his evolution as a loving caregiver following his partner’s terminal diagnosis. Written in accessible language, for individuals searching for ways to be of assistance to family and friends who have been diagnosed with terminal illness, also ideal for those who want to serve as hospice volunteers.

I read this book while taking care of my sister, who was at home, dying of cancer. This was my second experience with family end-of-life caretaking and hospice, but each was unique. In reading “Reflections of a Loving Partner” while enduring my sister’s passing, my emotions and practical needs during this time were both supported. The lessons of the book are applicable to many situations. I particularly like the way Andrew and Gil’s story is juxtaposed with Andrew’s hospice training. I gave my original copy of the book to one of the hospice care nurses, and bought a second copy which I intend to donate to my local library — a true testimony to the value and thoughtfulness of this book!
