Chiricahua aftermath: Horseshoe Two Fire leaves behind green, grey and black
Dawn Wilson, director of the Southwest Research Station near Portal, is working in partnership with Arizona Game and Fish to reintroduce the Chiricahua leopard frog, above. They bred leopard frogs with stock out of Leslie Canyon with a goal of releasing them in the area in September or October. Now, they will have to watch out for burnt silt or other potential fire -related problems at the release area. (DICK KAMP/Wick Communications) Some settlements are on the (traditionally) greener east side of the mountains, where birders, active and retired biologists, ranchers and urban refugees live and work. The efforts of as many as 1000 firefighters left Cave Creek, Paradise and the South Fork of Cave Creek as verdant as could be expected during a spotty early monsoon season after a fire, intense freeze and drought. The area looks slightly beat up, but pleasant. Shades of grey ash and black mix with green on the slopes and some undergrowth back burns stand out along roads in the canyons. Those saved areas are open for tourism and limited day use hiking, although no camping in campgrounds. The road to Onion Saddle on the east side was closed on those days to deal with flooding impacts and it is uncertain when it will be open. It was open for a few days only so far this summer. The road over the mountains on the west side is closed-as is the Chiricahua National Monument. Floods and erosion have begun to transport black charcoal and sediment into creek beds and arroyos in the Paradise and Cave Creek watersheds. This situation is expected to worsen as more floods eat away burnt hillsides. Six inches of muck ran from a side canyon to the mailboxes in Paradise and the middle fork of Cave Creek ran black one mid July afternoon when I was present. Jackie Lewis George Walker House Bed and Breakfast in Paradise: "I am so ready for all of this ride, the fire, post-fire flood and ash emergencies and loss of a living, to be over. We'd been doing well with birders pre-fire; even the bridge closure from Portal to Paradise didn't affect much. We had to cancel most of May, June and July for business although we just had a nice couple here for a couple of days and another visitor coming this month. We have 13 days potentially full for August. "Here in the yard we have our usual species; Rick Taylor in Whitetail Canyon had 12 species of hummingbirds on Sunday and that's in an area that burned very badly.Fire Walking Frogs - News
