Michael Feinstein and friends dazzled us with songs from The American Songbook Friday and Saturday night at the Hollywood Bowl. I last saw Michael Feinstein at the Disney Concert Hall, and he outdid himself again in this Bowl show. This prolific entertainer is continually growing and getting better and better. He shared the stage with his talented guests, Florence Henderson, Cheyenne Jackson, Wayne Brady, and the ever amazing Dick Van Dyke. Feinstein showed clips from shows these performers have been on. He generously gave them the spotlight as they did solos, and he also performed duets with them. It made for a very entertaining evening.
Feinstein opened with, “Hello Los Angeles, you look very happy.” “Me too.” He exuberantly sang Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Neewly’s hit song “Once In a Lifetime.” “This is my moment” and it was his moment as he took command of the stage, climbed on top of the piano and sang “I’m gonna do great things.” Feinstein showed his humor as he quipped about his salute to the Great American Songbook, and called it Rod Stewarts’s Songbook. “That shows you how indestructible these songs are.” After the rousing opening number, Feinstein segued into a breathy “The Way You Look Tonight.” He has such smooth phrasing and, he caresses the notes with his mellifluous voice.
He introduced his long-time friend, and everyone’s television mother, Florence Henderson and showed a clip from “the Brady Bunch.” Henderson, still trim and gorgeous spoke fondly of producer, Sherwood Schwartz who wrote the “Brady Bunch” theme song. She and Feinstein sang “Side by Side.” Next, Feinstein introduced handsome hunk, Cheyenne Jackson who was on Broadway with “All Shook Up,” “Xanadu,” and “Finnegan’s Rainbow.” Jackson sang “Birds Flying High, You Know How I Feel.” This talented man can sing! He has some great moves too. And he is so sexy! The two sang a fun duet, “Me and My Shadow.” Both have great voices, and you get the extremes of short and tall in this pairing.
