Fair and Loathing in Columbus
The Ohio State Fair pumps an estimated $68.5 million into Central Ohio's sagging economy. Royalty-free stuffed Brutus Buckeyes, a veritable feast of food on a stick and tickets to see the "African woman with lips like dinner plates," according to an unattended speaker propped up next to a vacant circus tent, are enough to cause even the tightest tightwad to part with his cash.
In addition, the fair accounts for almost 5,000 full- and part-time jobs, providing a much-needed source of income for overly persistent Abe Lincoln impersonators and tatted carnys who very well might otherwise be unemployed.
The fair might be known for its butter cow, but the annual event has turned into a cash cow. Hundreds of cars gather each August along its Hudson Street and 11th Avenue exits and its Twitter account brings notoriety on par with that of the escaped Bronx Zoo cobra.
Such popularity can't be ignored. Armed with an excuse to turn a work day into a play day, TOP staffers set out to investigate the fair in all its glory. What we found will shock you. Almost as much as the human salamander.

TOP ATTRACTIONS
There's no shortage of rickety old rides at the fair. Here are the best of the best.
- MTV Studios and Hard Rock Palace : While it's doubtful that these funhouses took their names by permission from the Viacom subsidiary and the chain of restaurants and hotels, they did blast music that was loud enough to shatter a child's eardrums. Tunes from the late '90s issued forth from both two-story funhouses, which were adorned with high-school art-class-caliber renderings of famous faces airbrushed on the outer walls. The weather-worn exteriors included likenesses of Justin Timberlake, T.I., Beyonce, David Lee Roth and Gene Simmons, just to name a few.
- Crazy Mouse : the tallest, largest, most-thrilling ride was unfortunately dubbed with a non-threatening moniker. The experience is the equivalent of Disney World's teacup ride mounted to a roller-coaster track, together composing a quease-ophiliac's worst nightmare. Just the idea of rising and falling and spinning wildly in circles with a gut full of Krispy Kreme hamburger likely means the operator of this ride has one of the fair's most-used mops.
