Lufkin teen raising money for drama/choir trip by selling handcrafted bottle ...

In theater parlance, Victoria Pruitt, a 13-year-old Lufkin Middle School Magnet student, is what is referred to as a “triple threat,” which means that she can, sing, dance and act. Now that she has added entrepreneurship to her list of talents and abilities, Victoria might need to copyright the term “quadruple threat.”

With the help of her mom, Tracie Pruitt, the poised, polite and pretty teen started up her own small business earlier this year as a way of raising money for the LMS drama/choir trip to New York planned for Spring Break 2012. With her business, Victoria and her mother handcraft personalized bottle cap-sized magnets with graphics and lettering.

“My aunt gave me a small bottle cap making kit for Christmas,” Victoria said. “I loved making them, and I really wanted to be able to go on the trip to New York City next spring, so I came up with the idea for VIP Caps as a way of raising money to do that.”

Victoria started her small business last February. Since then, she has raised about $350 of the $1,300 to $1,400 she will need to pay for the trip to New York. Given that she seems to be driven and passionate about theater, it is not all that far-fetched to imagine her enjoying three Broadway shows, one of which will be the new “Spiderman” musical, with the rest of the group from Lufkin Middle School next spring.

In addition to the tried and true word-of-mouth method, Victoria is also getting the word out about her business via a colorful display of some of her magnetic bottle caps, which is located at the Ranch House Restaurant in Lufkin. Tracie Pruitt said the restaurant’s owner, Susie McGaughey, very graciously allowed Victoria to advertise for VIP Caps in a central location within the restaurant.

Victoria explained she changed things around from the bottle cap design that came with her kit. She said with her bottle cap magnets, people can change them out whenever they feel like using a new design. The bottle caps she showed off featured motifs like the two lovestruck main characters of the upcoming ‘‘Twilight’’ movie, Spongebob Squarepants, sports team logos and American flag graphics, among many others.

“You’re not going to find bottle cap magnets like these anywhere,” Victoria said. “What I like about them is that they’re one of a kind and unique.”

Tracie Pruitt said she has a graphic arts program she uses to get the clip art and other designs for the bottle caps, and both mother and daughter add costume jewelry to the magnets in a process they described as “time consuming,” but rewarding. In addition, they use industrial-strength magnets that aren’t likely to fall off what they are affixed to. Victoria and her mother said the sky is almost the limit in regard to the magnets’ designs,  with the proviso that whatever it is has to fit into a 1-inch diameter circle.
