People say over and over again how it important it is to be careful while driving down the interstate. You must observe everything around you, and be prepared in case you come across something unexpected. Not everyone heeds that advice, as evidenced by a recent car accident in Atlanta.
A police officer apparently stopped at the scene of a crash on Interstate 20 near the Evans Mill Road exit last weekend. He was there to take stock of an accident in which a tractor trailer driver was sideswiped by another vehicle. Unfortunately, he got a lot more than he bargained for.
After he stepped out of his cruiser to approach the truck, another driver struck the officer. He suffered a host of injuries, including a fractured skull, swelling near his brain stem and several broken bones in his leg. Due to the severity of his head injuries, he was placed in a medically-induced coma, according to the Associated Press.
People are scratching their heads over how this could have happened, including the truck driver who was involved in the original accident. The officer was apparently wearing a reflective vest, and the truck driver wonders how the driver missed all the flashing lights.
According to reports, the officer's sister did worry for her brother's safety - but because of the more typical dangers of police work, not car accidents. But in many ways, busy roads can be the most dangerous part of the job, particularly when people aren't paying attention. Case in point: after the officer was injured, several accidents were reported near the same exit.
