AS.34 Kormoran | History Wars Weapons

The AS.34 Kormoran is an air-to-surface, anti-ship guided missile developed between 1962 and 1972 by Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm, a former German Aerospace company. Powered by a solid-propellant rocket engine, the AS-34 has a maximum range of 23 miles and travels at a maximum speed of Mach 0.9. The Kormoran is fitted out with an inertial guidance system for the midcourse phase and switched to active radar homing during the terminal attack phase. It is armed with a 220-kg perforating warhead. The AS.34 measures 4.4 m in length and 34.4 cm in diameter.

The AS.34 Kormoran is used by both German and Italian navies and is launched from a Tornado fighter aircraft. Two variants of this accurate missile has been manufactured: AS.34 Kormoran 1 and AS.34 Kormoran 2. The first one entered service with the German Navy in 1973 and the second in 1991. The AS.34 Kormoran 2 is an improved version of the AS.34 Kormoran 1. Development of model 2 began in 1983, with first flight and firing trials taking place in early 1986. Kormoran 2 is equipped with an improved warhead, all-digital electronics, improved active radar seeker, increased ECM-resistance, a stronger booster rocket, a longer range, improved automated target selection, multiple launch capability, and an increased resistance to countermeasures.
