Viacom 3Q seen higher but studio future cloudy

Viacom Inc. is expected to report higher earnings for its fiscal third-quarter on Friday because of ad revenue growth at pay TV channels such as MTV and Comedy Central. Disappointing results from "Kung Fu Panda 2," the animated movie it distributed for studio partner DreamWorks Animation, and uncertainty about the future of the movie studio could weigh on results.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: What CEO Philippe Dauman says about future plans for Paramount Pictures, which is on the verge of losing the distribution business of two major studio partners — The Walt Disney Co.'s Marvel and DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc.

Paramount has distributed the superhero movies of Marvel, including this summer's "Thor" and "Captain America: The First Avenger." But Disney bought Marvel in late 2009 and last October, Disney said it was buying out the rest of Paramount's distribution deal with Marvel, starting with "The Avengers" next year.

Paramount's deal to distribute DreamWorks Animation's movies expires at the end of 2012 and the two sides have been at loggerheads over a new deal.

Each distribution deal gives Paramount a percentage of the box office grosses — usually less than 10 percent — but with little downside risk since its costs are recouped off the top of ticket sales.

Although Paramount said last month that it is starting up an animation division, hot on the heels of its March hit "Rango," the unit plans to make about one movie a year, not enough to replace the four to five it has been distributing from its two partners.

The $1 billion grosser, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," came out in late June, meaning the costs of promoting it, but not all the revenue, will be counted in the quarter.

WHY IT MATTERS: Movie studio revenues point to how freely consumers are spending their discretionary cash. Viacom's cable TV channels also reflect the health of the advertising market. Its results, when looked at together with media peers CBS Corp. and Time Warner Inc., which reported earlier in the week, could shed more light on the direction of the economy for the rest of the year.

WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect Viacom to earn 86 cents per share on revenue of $3.52 billion.

LAST YEAR'S QUARTER: Viacom earned an adjusted 69 cents per share on revenue of $3.30 billion.
