How • In addition to wearing an external heart defibrillator and taking medications, she strictly followed medical recommendations, eliminating alcohol and salt from her diet and watching her weight.

Missouri Baptist Medical Center will present "Heart Disease: The Latest Diagnostic and Treatment Therapies," an opportunity to learn about the No. 1 killer of women and men in the United States.

The panel discussion will be held twice: from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac, 1335 S. Lindbergh Blvd.; and from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the Jewish Community Center's Marilyn Fox Building, 16801 Baxter Road in Chesterfield.

A group of cardiac specialists on staff at Missouri Baptist will discuss diagnosis, treatment and prevention from three perspectives — intervention, cardiovascular surgery and electrophysiology. They will be able to answer questions about atrial fibrillation, pacemakers, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, heart attacks, coronary catheterization and other topics relating to heart disease.

Refreshments will be served at both events.

Looking back, symptoms of Kim Davis' heart problems began to appear last July.

Tall and thin, she tries to keep her weight within a fixed range and, when it climbs to the upper limit, drinks a SlimFast for lunch at Jersey Community High School in Jerseyville, where she works as a guidance counselor, and takes a Zumba class at her local Curves.

But this time these measures didn't address the problem and, through the fall, her middle continued to expand. Davis, 47, was increasingly short of breath, especially climbing stairs, and had trouble sleeping through the night, sometimes waking to gurgling in her chest and congestion as though from a cold. Medication for heartburn seemed to help, but the relief it provided was temporary.

"I just thought my metabolism was slowing down," she said. Davis, the youngest in a family of 11 children, said her parents raised them not to go to the doctor unless they were dying and didn't want to schedule an appointment to "cry about menopause.
