The Battery .... Fort Sumter ... Dock Street Theatre ... Rainbow Row ... the Four Corners of Law ... the Coburg Cow. The first five Charleston landmarks remain safe for posterity. And now, thanks to the good sense of the folks at the Borden Dairy Co. of South Carolina, the sixth shall also endure.
Fears arose last week that Borden's takeover of what was once Coburg Dairy would result in at least changing the name of the Coburg Cow -- and at worst removing it from its perch of honor at St. Andrews Shopping Center, where it has long loomed as the epitome of bovine beauty alongside and above Savannah Highway.
As reported in Thursday's Post and Courier, the Coburg Cow, in different forms, has stood watch there for more than half a century, with an occasional hiatus for repairs, such as replacements of tails ripped off by rascally humans. Though many people, mostly young ones, climbed atop the Coburg Cow during her first few decades, she has been prudently shielded by a barrier since a Citadel cadet was injured in a fall from her 20 years ago.

So even if you're lactose intolerant, celebrate the past, present and future of a special symbol in a special city that thrives on preserving positive traditions.
