GOP debate scheduled for Nov. 9 at Oakland University Marisa Schultz/ The Detroit NewsMichigan will join the national political spotlight Nov. 9 when Oakland University hosts a Republican presidential candidate debate with a focus on the economy, jobs, taxes and the deficit.
Seventeen presidential debates have been scheduled, by the Republican National Committee's count. This is the only one set for Michigan, which voted for Democrat Barack Obama in 2008, but went the other way last year electing a Republican for governor and GOP majorities in the state House and Senate.
The GOP wants to keep up the momentum in 2012 and hopes the debate, co-hosted with CNBC and the Michigan Republican Party, will help convince Michigan voters to put a new leader in the White House.
"This debate will showcase Republican ideas to grow jobs and bring prosperity back to Michigan and our country," Michigan Republican Party Chairman Bobby Schostak in a statement Monday.
Participants have not been announced, but Schostak expects "a full table." Mitt Romney, son of the former governor, announced in June six presidential debates he'll join through October, including the upcoming Aug. 11 Iowa debate. Romney is reviewing the invitation to his native state.
"It is a tremendous event for our community that shows the crucial importance of our Michigan in both the primary process and the general election," Livonia presidential hopeful Rep. Thaddeus McCotter said.
Michigan is a crucial battleground state with high unemployment, "making it the perfect place for the candidates to present their plans to revive the nation," Mark Hoffman, CNBC president, said. The debate airs 8-10 p.m. from campus on CNBC.
Other candidates include U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, businessman Herman Cain, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson.
Oakland University President Gary Russi, who is intent on raising the Rochester university's national profile, shared the news in an email Monday morning to faculty and staff.
"We can all share a great sense of pride that our public profile has increased to the point that we are a first-choice venue to host an event that showcases our university to the entire nation," he said.
