SAN BERNARDINO: Travel-themed fundraiser set to support food bank

Second Harvest Food Bank is asking people to take a trip for a good cause at the upcoming fundraiser event, "Passport to end Hunger."

Event participants will travel from room to room at the National Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino on Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m. listening to themed live music, taking in the photography exhibit, "About Hunger & Resilience" and dining on foods from six countries.

Tickets cost $75 per person or a table of 10 can be sponsored for $1,000.

Funds raised at the event will go to the Riverside-based food bank, which works with nonprofit organizations in both Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Michael Nye's photography and audio stories exhibit, "About Hunger & Resilience," will be on display at Saturday's event and then will move to the California Room at the California Theatre Aug. 9-23.

There are 50 photographs in the exhibit, and each has a headphones set with recordings of the subjects talking about their lives and what it's like to be hungry.

"Although these two events will merge at the Passport to End Hunger, the art exhibit will be made available for an extended time," said Tracylyn Sharrit, director of development at Second Harvest Food Bank.

"We can only address hunger if we understand in a more comprehensive and personal way."

Suggested attire for the evening is casual vacation wear.

Other activities will include island Reggae music and Rio Samba dancing, music from A Wonderful Trio from the San Bernardino Symphony, and cultural dance from Celtic Troup, Asian Lion and Belly Troup.

Diners will learn about Second Harvest Food Bank, and awards will be given to Friend of the Hungry Award Winners and sponsors.

SAN BERNARDINO: SANBAG staffer tapped as interim director - PE.com ...

San Bernardino Associated Governments' long-time planning director will lead the agency until officials can find a permanent replacement for the retiring executive director, the transportation agency's board decided this morning (Wednesday).

Ty Schuiling, a SANBAG planner since 1990, will take over for Deborah Barmack on Aug. 8 as interim director, SANBAG President and Highland Councilman Larry McCallon said. Barmack is retiring after 20 years with SANBAG, four as the agency's executive director.

Schuiling, the agency's director of planning and programming, said he will not be a candidate for the permanent position.

Also Wednesday, officials said a five-member committee will evaluate and recommend Barmack's replacement. McCallon, San Bernardino County supervisors Janice Rutherford and Brad Mitzelfelt, San Bernardino Mayor Pat Morris and Southern California Association of Governments executive director Hasan Ikhrata will interview finalists for the job, McCallon said.

Officials hope to have an executive director chosen by the end of the year, McCallon said.
