Purdue has its own high-profile kicker

CHICAGO -- Michigan brought star quarterback Denard Robinson to represent its program at Big Ten Media Days. Nebraska had Jared Crick, Rex Burkhead and Lavonte David. Four of the 12 teams brought quarterbacks.

And Purdue brought senior place-kicker Carson Wiggs. Really, a kicker?

Wiggs clearly is good at his job. He made a field goal from 59 yards in a game, hit from 67 yards in the spring game and kicked a 72-yarder in practice.

Purdue coach Danny Hope called Wiggs the most exciting kicker in football. He said that if Wiggs wasn't such a valuable kicker and was a little bigger, he'd be playing linebacker.

Still, even Wiggs was surprised when he was selected to represent the team at Media Days. He said he didn't realize how big of an event this was (more than 500 media members attended) and that it was neat to talk to players from other teams.

"Even though I've played some of these teams, I've never got to see the actual coaches close, like Joe Paterno is sitting at that table right there. Wow," Wiggs said. "When we played them he was up in the press box. (Purdue safety Albert Evans) just walked past a little bit ago and said, 'Hey, I got a picture with JoePa.'"

Wiggs offered an introduction to the Big Ten.

"Being from the South (Grand Prairie, Texas) I would say my impression of the Big Ten is you think of the running game in the snow and grinding it out," he said. "This will be my fourth year and I've gotten to see how many athletes there are, and the Big Ten isn't really recognized for the great athletes that we have. We show we can compete in the bowl games against the SEC and their athletes."

Story time with Joe Paterno, Part 2

Day 2 of Media Days included players and coaches sitting at tables and answering questions for about two hours. I spent about 20 minutes sitting next to Paterno. He sipped coffee and spoke softly, making it feel like a casual conversation.

Like he did Thursday, Paterno used most questions he was asked as opportunities to tell stories. Asked about new Indiana coach Kevin Wilson, Paterno instead talked mostly about some of the coaches that are no longer in the conference.

"I like (former Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez) and I've known Jimmy Tressel's family for 100 years," Paterno said. "Rich Rodriguez's wife was a cheerleader when we played West Virginia. I hate to see those guys go.
