Junior golf tournament planned
The 6th Annual S.K. Smith Junior City Golf Tournament is slated for Aug. 8 at the Mt. Carmel Municipal Golf Course. Open to ages 5-18, the tournament format will vary by holes played according to age.
At 10 a.m. boys and girls ages 15-18 will tee off on hole #1 for 18 hole play. Also at 10 a.m. girls 8-9 will play three holes starting at #10 and boys 8-9 will play three holes starting at #15. At 10:30 a.m. boys and girls 13-14 will play nine holes starting at #1.
Girls and boys 5-7 will play three holes with girls starting on hole #10 and boys starting at hole #15 at 10:30 a.m. At 10:45 a.m. boys and girls 10-12 will play five holes starting at hole #1.
Participants are asked to register with the golf shop at 262-5771 and should plan to report in at least 30 minutes prior to their assigned tee time. There is no cost to participate.

Personally, I’d go with a two-day stroke play, a la PGA tournaments and courses, in various courses across the city (I doubt that a single course would be able to hold that many players from around the world) and all players who make the top 32 or 64 or whatever number goes into match play. It would be the same format and seeding as NCAA hoops or the NBA and NHL playoffs. This would continue on until the the end of the Games. The medal winners would be determined the same way as any team sport in world competition: top two play for gold and silver, while the other two who lost in the semi-final would play for bronze.
