FRANK: Student producer keeps busy filming
Summer vacation is anything but time off for Matt Thompson and many of his classmates at Cathedral Catholic High School.
He's putting in 12-hour days filming his second student-produced full-length film. He began shooting "Night Sights," a science-fiction drama detailing a father's search for his son's soul, in late June, and figures to wrap sometime his month.
A cast of 15 actors and a crew of 20, many of them high school and college friends of the 16-year-old Thompson, are involved in the project, all working for free. Leading the cast is veteran actor Tom Virtue , whose credits include the Disney Channel series "Even Stevens" and the role of the Rev. Stone on ABC Family's "The Secret Life of the American Teenager."
This is the second straight summer Thompson has spent producing a movie. Last year he wrote, produced and directed a 90-minute feature called "The Medallion of Man" that was screened in two local theaters.
Thompson's filmmaking has already caught the eye of a big name in the industry.
"He made a short film for a project when he was 14. Steven Spielberg saw it and wrote to him to keep making movies," said Thompson's sister, Maria, 18, who is handing publicity for the film. "When Steven Spielberg says do this, you better live up to it."
Plans are to premiere the film in December.
