Sam was a good dog

If there’s a heaven for dogs, there’s no question that my good friend’s yellow lab, Sam, is there running free, playfully barking at the birds and squirrels and nibbling on chew toys until his heart’s content.

Last week, the call that I’d been expecting from my friends for several months now, finally came.

“We had to put Sam down this morning,” my friend, Diane, said in a saddened tone.
Diane and her husband, Dan, raised Sam from the time he was just a pup. Because they never had any children, Sam was considered their “kid.” Several months ago, Sam’s age – 15 years equivalent to 105 in dog years – began taking its toll on the people-loving pooch. He’d suffered a stroke a number of months ago – followed by a few more episodes – but kept bouncing back. I think he even amazed their veterinarian.

But last Friday morning, as difficult as it could be, they knew Sam wasn’t going to bounce back this time.

They called their veterinarian to their home to administer the heart-stopping shot. Sam, probably like most dogs, hated every trip to the vet. I imagine it’s the same fear most children have going to the doctor or the dentist. In recent months, Sam was taken there countless times. Those visits to the animal doctor simply upset the brown-eyed dog.

My heart broke as Diane told me the details of their dog’s last hours. Tears welled in my eyes as she described how the vet first administered a shot to calm him down. She said Sam walked to her side, as if to say, “It’s OK, I’m ready to go to puppy heaven. Thanks for providing me a good life.” They next laid him on a blanket as his heart rate slowed, eventually to nothing at all.

You may wonder why I’m so attached to Sam. It started years ago, when my friends and I jokingly referred to the yellow lab as “my brother.” It was a pretty cool relationship. At Christmas, Sam and I exchanged gifts. His was usually some new chew toy; mine were a few ideas I’d offer to Diane.

During a camping trip we’d all taken together one summer, Sam and I – “brother and sister” – had our picture taken together. We both sported a wide grin in that photo. I swear Sam was literally smiling! I’ve looked at that picture in recent days. It hangs on the front door of my refrigerator. And my friends, they, too have a copy of it in a frame that sits on their kitchen counter. I have no plans to remove my picture anytime soon. I don’t think Dan and Diane do either.
