Havelock military summit scheduled Thursday

HAVELOCK — Gov. Bev Perdue will speak at a strategy session on North Carolina’s military bases Thursday, the first of four regional military summits scheduled before a statewide summit at Fort Bragg Sept. 29.

The session at Havelock Tourist and Events Center also includes words from Dale Carroll, deputy secretary of commerce, and will be set up in four panel sessions moderated by Tom Braaten, retired Marine Corps major general and former Cherry Point air station commander who is now Coastal Carolina Regional Airport director.

John A. Nicholson, the governor’s military affairs coordinator, said, “The primary focus of the regional summit is to examine the impact of the military and defense community on local economic development” and identify economic deficiencies in economic development and workforce education, infrastructure, and encroachment.

Participants and guests will be welcomed by Havelock Mayor Jimmy Sanders and Craven County Board of Commissioners Chairman Steve Tyson before four panels line up to provide information on those topics and take input and questions from as many as 150 participants.

The work session is expected to last about 3½ hours, said Braaten. “We’re putting a lot of people in a short time.”

The first full panel will focus on military economic development and will include Carroll, Jim Davis, Craven Economic Development director, Scott Dorney from the Military Business Center in Jacksonville, and Mary Beth Fennell of Fleet Readiness Center-East.

Representatives from the N.C. Department of Transportation and state board member Hugh Overholt, a representative from the N.C. Division of Environment and Natural Resources, and Cherry Point Executive Officer Lt. Col. Eric S. Weissberger will man the panel on infrastructure, encroachment, and land use compatibility.

Talking about education will be Anetta Davenport, assistant superintendent of Craven County Schools, Layne Harpine of Craven Community College, and Lt. Col. Weissberger.

Col. Mitchell Bauman, commander of FRC-East, and Chris Holder, head of research and engineering there, will discuss FRC-East as an economic engine.

Nicholson said the goal is to get critical information and data to determine what the major economic issues and challenges facing the state in these communities. That information will be the basis of the major summit agenda at Fort Bragg.

Sena Cummings - Ft. Bragg Advocate-News

Sena Marie Olson Cummings of Fort Bragg passed away Monday, July 25, 2011 at Mendocino Coast District Hospital after a long illness. Born on May 26, 1947 in Pasadena, Calif., to Clifford and Dorothy Olson, she was 64.

Sena spent most of her childhood in Redding, Calif. Her family later moved to Terra Linda, Calif., where Sena graduated from Terra Linda High School in 1965. Upon her graduation, Sena enrolled in the nursing program at College of Marin and graduated in 1967. During this time Sena met her husband Craig. They were married on June 22, 1968. Sena began her nursing career at Parkway Convalescent Hospital and later went on to be a critical care nurse at Ross Hospital and Petaluma Hospital. When the family relocated to Fort Bragg, Sena continued her nursing career at Mendocino Coast District Hospital. Her commitment to the profession propelled her to the position as Manager of Staff Development until she was forced into retirement in 2000 due to illness. She taught numerous CPR classes throughout the years and was proud to have trained and certified over 5,000 people to do CPR.

Sena took an active role in her children's lives by being active in the PTA, a Coast Youth Soccer coach, instigator of the traveling soccer team, president of the Fort Bragg Little League, major supporter of the local Cubs football program, the Fort Bragg High School football teams, wrestling program and baseball teams, and the Safe and Sober Graduation Party, and more. Fundraising for these community activities was her specialty, and there aren't many people or businesses in the Fort Bragg community that didn't get a persuasive phone call or letter requesting their support of these community events.

Her caring, giving, and helpful nature drove her to want to do more for people in her community.

Sena became a coordinator for the Make A Wish Foundation, and for many years put together fundraising dinners and auctions that helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for children with life threatening medical conditions.

Sena had many proud moments in her life, most of which included her children and grandchildren. Sena is survived by her husband of 43 years Craig, children Sean Cummings and wife Krista, Shane Cummings and wife Heidi, Shannon VanWormer and husband Adam, grandchildren Cameron Marie, Chance Michael, and Isabella Marie, brother Devon, and countless friends and relatives.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Sena will take place on Saturday, Aug.
