Jatropha biofuels set for revival after 'extraordinary collapse'
Journal.At the start of the last decade, jatropha was touted as a source of sustainable biofuels, with advocates saying it does not compete with food production, as it is not edible, it can grow on degraded land not suitable for food crops and it can withstand drought. However, the reality was far beneath the ambition.
The pursuit of jatropha as a biofuel “appears to be an extreme case of a well-intentioned top-down climate mitigation approach, undertaken without adequate preparation and ignoring conflict of interest, and adopted in good faith by other countries, gone awry bringing misery to millions of poorest people across the world”, wrote Promode Kant, director of New Delhi’s Institute of Green Economy and Shuirong Wu of Beijing’s Chinese Academy of Forestry, in The Extraordinary Collapse of Jatropha as a Global Biofuel .
Investors also had their fingers burnt in the jatropha biofuels boom of the mid-2000s. According to London-based corporate research firm Hardman & Co, four of the five listed jatropha companies have sustained declines in capital value, although it notes that for two of these – D1 Oils and Mission NewEnergy – it was their refining businesses, not their jatropha plantations, which were the major causes of disappointment.
Doug Hawkins, a director at Hardman & Co, said that professional planters and crop scientists are developing commercial-scale plantations in suitable growing locations, which have the potential to prove the commercial case.
“What was not done, and is being done now, is the application of science. We are getting professional investment in developing and planting,” he told Environmental Finance .
While Hawkins could not be certain if jatropha plantings are increasing, he is in little doubt that what is being planted is of higher quality. Plantation owners are often affiliating with jatropha crop science firms, notably Singapore’s JOil and Belgium’s Quinvita, to develop the plants, he said.
“I think it’s too early to say whether it will be a commercial success. There’s a good chance that jatropha will become a useful crop, providing a useful return to investors. But whether it becomes a global colossus like palm oil is a big ask.”
The drivers for planting jatropha are still present, such as a high oil price, political instability in the Middle East, increasing use of vehicles and concerns over climate change and sustainability.
