Rocken wie in den guten alten Zeiten

Pop, Jazz, Blues, Soul, Cajun und Zydeco: Das „Best-of-Music“-Festival auf dem Marktplatz bot dem Publikum von Donnerstag bis Samstag eine breite Palette verschiedener Stile. Zum Abschluss wurde am Samstagabend aber noch einmal ordentlich gerockt: Woodstock-Veteran Miller Anderson und Blueser Junior Watson sorgten für Stimmung.

Stefan Benning war mehr als zufrieden. „Nach dem verregneten Auftakt am Donnerstag hatten wir am Freitagabend rund 7000 Besucher“, sagte der Stadtarchivar und stellvertretender Leiter des städtischen Kulturamts. „Als Sidney Youngblood spielte, ging die Post ab.“ Am Samstagabend, schätzt Benning, besuchten rund 5000 Besucher das Musikfestival, das die Stadt mit Unterstützung zahlreicher Sponsoren nun im zweijährigen Rhythmus organisiert. Nur mit Hilfe der Sponsoren sei es möglich, international bekannte Musiker nach Bietigheim-Bissingen zu holen. „Hier tritt zwar nicht die erste, aber die zweite Garde der internationalen Musikszene auf“, so Benning. Auf Miller Anderson, der am Samstagabend auf dem Marktplatz spielte, trifft diese Aussage sicherlich zu. Auch wenn sein Name hierzulande nicht mehr allzu geläufig ist, hat er doch etwas mit Weltstars wie Joan Baez, Santana oder Joe Cocker gemeinsam: Wie sie ist Anderson im August 1969 beim legendären Woodstock-Festival aufgetreten, und zwar als Mitglied der Keef Hartley Band. gleich, erzählte Anderson, habe er zu seinem Mobiltelefon gegriffen und Jon Lord, Gründungsmitglied von Depp Purple, angerufen. „Hörst du, sie singen unseren Song“, habe er seinem alten Weggefährten erzählt. Zwar erzählt Anderson diese Geschichte vermutlich nicht nur in Bietigheim-Bissingen, aber Schwamm drüber. Musikalisch wird Miller Anderson die Welt der Musik wohl nicht mehr aus den Angeln heben. Das ist auch gar nicht erforderlich: Sein routinierter (Blues-)Rock mit gelegentlichen Psychedelic-Einflüssen mag sich seit den guten alten Woodstock-Zeiten kaum weiterentwickelt haben, strotzt aber immer noch vor Energie und begeisterte die „Best-of-Music“-Besucher, von denen sich nicht wenige an die eigene Jugend erinnert haben dürften. Ein routinierter Entertainer wie Anderson weiß, was das Publikum hören will. Zumal hatte er mit Kris Gray (Bass), Frank Tischer (Keyboard) und Tommy Fischer (Schlagzeug) hervorragende Musiker an Bord, die den Meister treffend in Szene setzten. Zum Abschluss trat dann der US-amerikanische Musiker Junior Watson mit seiner Band auf die Bühne. Schade nur, dass zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon viele Gäste den Marktplatz verlassen hatten. Sie versäumten ein beeindruckendes Konzert jenes Mannes, den die Los Angeles Times einst als besten lebenden Bluesgitarristen bezeichnet hatte.

Rockasteria: Keef Hartley Band - Overdog (1970 uk, fantastic blues ...

From the opening wah-wah rhythm guitar of "You Can Choose, and the thundering attack of Thain and Hartley when the group comes in, it's clear that Overdog is a considerably different beast to The Time Is Near.... While the previous album had an energy of its own, "You Can Choose righteously bristles with excitement. While nowhere near the metal-edge of Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, Miller adopts a weightier tone and more "reckless abandon approach to soloing. There were comparisons, at the time, between Keef Hartley Band and Colosseum, the group spearheaded by drummer Jon Hiseman, who guests on a couple of tracks here. The link is clear when Hartley takes the compositional reins on a couple of tracks, including the "Enroute section of the eight-minute "Theme/Enroute/Theme Reprise medley, which is a vamp-based jam feature for guest flautist Johnny Almond, whose group Mark-Almond would mine similar turf. He also contributes the Latin jazz-tinged, minor-keyed instrumental vamp "Imitations From Home, with Hiseman contributing some propulsive conga work. But these tracks represent the lighter side of Overdog, an overall heavier album. Anderson's title track begins with thundering tom-toms and a bass pulse, over which Anderson delivers some processed guitar before heading into flat-out funk territory. "Roundabout —heard here in its original version and on two additional bonus takes—begins with another tom tom-driven beat that features a horn arrangement that, like many of the horn parts here and on The Time is Near..., could easily have fit into any version of British jazz/rock group Nucleus. Ultimately it turns rockier, but never loses sight of the soul component. The link between Keef Hartley Band and groups like Nucleus is, in fact, not a far-fetched one. The difference is that Nucleus came to rock from a jazz background, while Keef Hartley Band did just the opposite. That there are common meeting points is further demonstration of the remarkably fluid cross-fertilization that was taking place in England at the time. Despite the liberal intermixing of musicians, each group managed to assert its own identity, and while there were other bands examining some of the same musical references, none of them sounded quite like Keef Hartley Band.
