Montanans invited to stitch piece of 9/11 flag

Today at noon in the Capitol Rotunda, people from across the state who have been nominated as heroes will help restore a flag that was nearly destroyed at the Twin Towers during the Sept. 11, 2001, attack. These citizens will stitch part of a U.S. flag that flew over the Montana Veterans Cemetery into the national flag.

Lt. Gov. John Bohlinger and Denny Deters of the New York Says Thank You Foundation will speak at the event.

The flag is being taken across the nation by the foundation so that people from every state can help restore it.

The flag will be displayed in the Rotunda with the Historical Society’s “Native Words, Native Warriors” exhibit that honors Native American and Montana military veterans.

Once it is restored, the flag will become part of the permanent collection of the National September 11 Memorial Museum being built at the site of the World Trade Center.

A formal presentation of the colors, a Native American honor song by the Togendowangan Society on the Freedom Drum, and a bagpipe tribute by Beth Foster will be part of the ceremony. Refreshments provided by Van’s Thriftway will be served afterwards.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to make a stitch or two of their own.

Colors are very important in the flag as they carry meaning in them. When we consider from the color perspective the different American flags have different meaning. Let us consider the flag of Arizona it contains 13 red and yellow rays representing the sun and the 13 American colonies while the copper colored star placed in the center of the flag indicates the presence of copper mining in Arizona. Similarly in the Colorado’s flag the white part stands for the snow covered mountain part and the red color stands for the availability of the red soil. The blue color and the yellow color in the flag signify the sky and the sun respectively.

On 4th July 1960 the present version of the flag with 50 stars was introduced. The American flag is often called as “Old Glory and the star-spangled banner” which is also the title of the national anthem of America. The 50 stars in the flag symbolize the 50 states and hence the starred blue canton often called as union.
