FAA shutdown grounds South Florida projects
, Now in its 13th day, has grounded about 14 projects at South Florida airports.The FAA fell into a temporary shutdown on July 23 after Congress failed to pass its 21st short-term funding extension. Congress recessed for summer vacation this week, delaying any chance for a quick funding measure until September.
Government leaders have urged U.S. representatives to return to Washington.
“Construction workers across America will lose their jobs and local communities will be hurt the longer this goes on,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a news release. “Congress needs to pass an FAA bill to prevent further economic damage.”
As a result of the shutdown, 12 workers on a $2.1 million status light project at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport have been removed from the job, airport spokesman Greg Meyer said. The project is an extra safety measure that includes embedding LED lights in runways, along the side of runways and where runways meet taxiways to let pilots know the runway is safe.
The south runway expansion project at the airport has not been impacted because grant funds can still be accessed electronically, Meyer said.
Miami International Airport has 13 projects that could be impacted by the FAA shutdown.
Pre-applications for a re-roofing project on the old Concourse A and a resurfacing and lighting project on a diagonal runway have been delayed, MIA spokesman Marc Henderson said. The applications were submitted through the FAA area district office in Orlando, where employees have been furloughed. Work on a project that would relocate runway navigational aids has also been delayed.
