John Adams students' project results in cigarette butt cleanup
They call themselves the "Butt Kickers."
Four John Adams Middle School students — Brenna Sharp, Khiara Las, Brennigan Las and Emma Odiet — made it their mission this summer to rid downtown Rochester of discarded cigarette butts.
"Animals can eat them. If they eat enough of them, they could die," Khiara said. "They never really go away, and they're just gross laying there."
So the four children took matters into their own hands. Invited by the Rochester Downtown Alliance, one Saturday in July they picked up 5,644 butts in a four-hour timeframe. Read about it in Thursday's print edition.

The school missed the mark because special-education students' reading test scores were too low. This is the first year that the school, formerly known as Adams Middle, has not met standards since Saraland split from the Mobile County system in 2008.

Elizabeth Halsey (Cameron Diaz) is a Chicago middle school teacher at John Adams Middle School who curses at her students, consumes lots of alcohol, smokes marijuana, and only shows movies while she sleeps through class. She plans to quit teaching and marry her wealthy fiancé, but when he dumps her, she must resume her job as a teacher. She tries to win over substitute teacher Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake), who is also wealthy. Amy Squirrel (Lucy Punch), a dedicated teacher and colleague of Elizabeth, also pursues Scott while the school's gym teacher, Russell Gettis (Jason Segel), makes advances on Elizabeth which she rejects. Elizabeth plans to get plastic surgery to enhance her breasts in order to be able to compete with the other attractive women that are trying to seduce rich men, but she cannot afford the $10,000 procedure. To make matters worse, Scott admits that he has a crush on Amy, only viewing Elizabeth as a friend. Elizabeth attempts to raise money for the surgery by participating in her 7th grade class car wash in provocative clothing and by manipulating parents to give her money for more school supplies and tutoring, but her efforts are not enough. Amy, acting on the growing resentment between them due to her pursuit of Scott and ignoring of school rules, attempts to warn the principal about Elizabeth's embezzlement scheme, but he dismisses her claims as groundless.Elizabeth later learns that the teacher of the class with the highest test scores on the state test will receive a hefty bonus. With this knowledge, Elizabeth decides to change her style of teaching, forcing the class to study intensely for the upcoming test. However, the change is not enough and the students have low scores on their quizzes, frustrating her even more. Meanwhile, she befriends Russell the gym teacher as Amy and Scott start dating. Elizabeth decides to steal the answers for the state test by impersonating a journalist and interviewing Carl Halabi (Thomas Lennon), who is in charge of the exam. Carl explains he can't give her the exam due to protocol. Elizabeth resorts to seducing him, drugging him in his office, and stealing the test herself. A month later, Elizabeth wins the bonus and pays for the appointment to get her breasts enlarged.Elizabeth learns that Amy and Scott will be chaperoning an upcoming field trip to Springfield, Illinois. In order to replace Amy as a chaperone on the field trip, Elizabeth rubs poison ivy on an apple and leaves it on Amy's desk.
