Coyote Crossing Offers Mexican Home Cooking Made With Family Recipes

Off of the beaten path from the main roads in Conshohocken lies a restaurant featuring Mexican cuisine called Coyote Crossing . Influenced by family recipes combined with a talented staff and picturesque, comfortable seating, it’s an oasis of regional food fit for the whole family.

Coyote Crossing is hidden from daily commuters on Fayette Street, but popular to those in the know. On this day, I overheard the hostess fitting callers into an already packed weekend reservation book. Luckily I thought ahead and secured my table for my culinary adventure.

Although I have visited friendly restaurants, before everyone from the hostess to the bussers greeted me as soon as I walked into the door and sat down at my table. The décor was not the trendy, clichéd atmosphere of so many other Mexican restaurants. It was elegant without being snobby.

If you have to wait for a table at the bar, enjoy Coyote Crossing’s homemade sangrias, mojitos, and margaritas either by the glass or the picture. The sangrias are made every day with fruity alcohol deliciousness. The diced apples and pears float within the mixture.

Gazing upon the menu, it was a difficult decision to narrow down on an appetizer for the night. Along with the complimentary salsa that was perfectly prepared and seasoned, my dining companion and I picked the guacamole. 

The guacamole could have used a bit more seasoning, but the freshness of the avocado shined through. Coarsely mashed, the avocado was combined with onions, cilantro, and peppers to give a variation of textures in your mouth.

I made the glutton’s error of eating too many tortilla chips. I wasn’t able to stop eating the housemade chips with the dips. There is no mistake of thinking that Coyote Crossing’s chips are from a bag.

Prepared in-house like everything else, the chips hold a hefty scoop of guacamole, salsa, and in some cases, both. As soon as my server saw the basket decimated, she happily brought over another basket filled with those addictive chips.

The chef’s weekly special called a Tampiquena was the first entrée picked. My dining companion insisted on ordering her steak well done much to my chagrin. Still, the grilled and sliced flat fillet mignon was juicy and tender. The seasonings were perfect with the flavors tingling on my tongue.

The side dishes included a creamy onion creation. The only negative observation is that I wished they included more because of its tastiness. The onions still retained a bit of its crisp, but without the bite. The creamy sauce wasn’t overbearing or too heavy.

This Mission, Kansas (Greater Kansas City Area) restaurant has been a family favorite for years. Regular diners there see it as a special sit-down eating-out treat. The restaurant is not only budget friendly and speedy, its food is genuinely fresh and tasty, just like in the ones having closed-door kitchens and numerous waiters and waitresses.

Upon entering it, you pass by an indoor stained glass window. Then, in the hallway leading to the cafeteria line, several large-print menus hang on the wall. Once you get to the beginning of the cafeteria line after making a menu selection, be sure to take both a tray and several napkins. You'll need both of them along with your eating utensils.

The main dining room is fairly large and plain. But it is sectioned and buffered for different sized groups and seating preferences. Large nooks are also available for seating.

Niche .

Its niche appears to be an array of quickly and carefully tossed together choices from a non-complicated menu that satisfies most appetites arriving there. This restaurant's lengthy lunch and dinner lines attest to this concept, daily.

Menu .

The menu includes several cheese and salsa dips for chips (in addition to the free self-serve ones), plus Mexican specialties, combinations, and a la carte . The salads are unnecessary extras unless one wants to eat light, or wants one to go with their meal. Plenty of lettuce, tomato, cheese, and extras come with the meals themselves. Self-service beverages are selected at the cash register (coffee, teas, milk, soft drinks, and water).

Most lunches range from $5-6. They include tacos, roll-up burrito, and three select combinations having two of the following items (taco, enchilada, chili relleno) plus beans or rice. Some of these plates are made into daily specials for senior citizens and others who do not eat heavily.

The dinners range from $6-11. The more expensive ones are meant for the hearty appetites. Be careful when ordering the burritos, chalupas, and chimichangas; the larger ones are monsters. The menu offers only one seafood item, Seafood Empanada: fried pastry shell filled w/seafood rangoon and topped with a choice of three sauces, 1) red, 2) chili con queso (CCQ cheese), or 3) Chilito (red plus sour cream, sliced black olives, and grated cheddar cheese). This meal has a seafaring taste to go with its rice and refried beans.
