Saginaw Valley Babe Ruth 13U squad among final six in Ohio Valley regional

MATTOON, Ill. — Only six teams remain in the Ohio Valley Regional for Babe Ruth Baseball's 13U division.

And Saginaw Valley is among them.

The Bay City-based squad kept its title hopes intact with a 5-2 win over Zanesville, Ohio in an elimination game on Sunday. Saginaw Valley meets either Jasper, Ind. or Effingham, Ill. in another must-win contest at 8 p.m. Monday for a chance at the final four.

From Saginaw Valley Babe Ruth:

Saginaw Valley played a very good all around game last night to move on. Clay Freysinger took the mound and threw six innings of 5 hit baseball only surrendering one earned run. Jason Russell came on in the bottom of the 7th to close out the victory. Saginaw Valley played terrific defense behind these pitchers committing only one error.

Lead-off hitter Austin Koin led the charge for the Michigan team, going 3 for 4 with two singles and a double. He also stole two bases and scored a run. Jack Tagget also had a triple and a single while the team pounded out 8 hits.

Saginaw Valley had the lead throughout the game, which was capped by a 4 run 4th inning which sent 8 hitters to the plate. The Michigan team used its speed to steal 8 bases and forced the defense into making some mistakes.

Saginaw Valley defeated Pendleton, West Virginia in an elimination game 12-2 in 5 innings to stay alive on Saturday.

Nick Tilot and Austin Koin combined on a 2 hitter giving up no earned runs, and striking out nine hitters.

Offensively, Saginaw Valley pounded out 10 hits and got 3 singles from Jaret Koin to lead the charge. Jaret also scored 2 runs. Lead-off hitter Austin Koin had a single, got on base 3 times, and scored 3 runs. Mason Erla had an RBI triple.
